The Distinguished Fellow award was established by the International Biogeography Society in 2021 to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions through excellence in basic research and exceptional service to the field of biogeography. Fellows are chosen every two years, and nominations for the January 2024 IBS meeting in Prague are due no later than March 1st, 2023.
Nominations should consist of a short description (max. 500 words) of the nominee’s contributions in basic research and exceptional service to the field of biogeography, co-signed by two members of the International Biogeography Society, an abbreviated CV of the nominee, and pdfs of max. four key papers or links to books where applicable. Nominations should be sent by email to srenner@nullwustl.edu. Nominees will normally have been engaged in the profession for 10 years or more, and will have engaged with the International Biogeography Society as a member or meeting attendee for a year or more.
Fellows will be selected by an international committee chosen by the incoming president and comprised of five people whose research represents different branches of biogeography and who come from different continents if at all possible. The committee’s choice of a slate of IBS Distinguished Fellows will be approved by a simple majority of board members. New IBS Distinguished Fellows are announced by the president at each biannual meeting. All suggested names will also be added to an existing Excel database of nominees, which currently includes 100 names. The database will be passed on to the next person heading the selection committee, but is not to be otherwise shared.
